A little planning goes a long way. This guide will help you pick outfits that feel like you, coordinate as a family, and photograph beautifully in natural Pacific Northwest light.
What to expect
Before we get to wardrobe, here's how I like to work — so you know what you're dressing for.
Relaxed, not staged
I lead with a few simple prompts and let real interactions happen. No stiff lineups — we're after genuine moments.
Kids move at their pace
Wiggly, shy, or full of energy — all welcome. We build in time to play so the good stuff isn't rushed.
Natural light, outdoors
Sessions are timed around soft, golden light, which is one more reason wardrobe and color matter.
Find your palette
Start here. Pick one palette below, then let everyone wear 2–3 colors from it — no need to match exactly.

Styling principles
Coordinate, don't match
Head-to-toe matching photographs flat. Pick 2–3 complementary colors and let everyone wear a different mix from the palette.
Less is more
Solids and small patterns keep the eye on your family. Skip large logos and graphic tees — they pull focus away from faces.
Dress to flatter
Skip tank tops, tube tops, and very short hemlines — sessions involve sitting, kneeling, and moving around.
Layer for depth
A cardigan, vest, scarf, or light jacket adds texture and an easy way to bring in a second color without more "outfit."
Quick do's & don'ts
Do
- Wear shoes you can walk and sit comfortably in
- Choose timeless pieces over trendy ones — accessorize instead
- Lay outfits out together a few days ahead
- Dress for where we're shooting (trail, beach, backyard)
- Keep kids in clothing they find comfortable
- Pack a stain pen or wipes, just in case
Don't
- Wear logos, slogans, or busy graphic prints
- Buy the outfits the day of — give it a week
- Get a spray tan or haircut right before the session
- Force uncomfortable clothing on little ones
- Wear bright or neon nail polish that pulls focus
- Stress about it — we'll problem-solve on the day
Pre-session checklist
- Palette chosen, outfits laid out together
- Everyone's tried their outfit on and can move in it
- Shoes picked — comfortable, not brand new
- Backup outfit for little ones packed
- Hair and makeup planned a day ahead, not same-day
- Stain pen, wipes, and snacks in the bag
